Holocaust Survivor Speaks at Leesburg Public Library
At 2 PM on Sunday, April 20, the Leesburg Public Library will host a presentation by Gene Klein, a Czech-born survivor of the Auschwitz Concentration camp. Mr. Klein, who currently lives in Central Florida will talk about his experiences as a prisoner of the Nazis during World war II. Also part of the program will be Rabbi Steven Cardonick, the leader of Temple Beth Shalom in Leesburg. He will present music of the Holocaust period in honor of Holocaust Remembrance Day, which is observed on May 2, 2008.
During his presentation, Mr. Klein will discuss his imprisonment, at the age of 16, by the Nazis and the subsequent death of 99 members of his immediate and extended family. This is a presentation for all ages, but parents are warned that very young children may not be mature enough for the subject of the Holocaust or the discussion on Nazi brutality against Jews and other victims of the methodical killing of 12 million people during World War II.
Since 1994, the State of Florida has mandated Holocaust education for all students in the state. The Leesburg Public Library will provide booklists and tip sheets that can connect teachers and home school parents to educational websites on the topics of tolerance, discrimination and the history of the Holocaust. There will also be bibliographies of adult titles.
For further information on this important program, contact Carol Anderson, Adult Reference Librarian, or Lois Gross, Youth Services Supervisor, at 728-9790. The Leesburg Public Library is your information destination for educational and information books, DVDs, and other related media.
