Beacon College and Leesburg Public Library present Dr. Donn Davis

The Beacon College Global Awareness Program is proud to present Howard University Professor Donn G. Davis, who will give a presentation on “Global Affirmative Action Policies: U.S. A., Brazil and Malaysia.” This program will take place on Sunday, September 14 at 2:00 p.m. in the Leesburg Public Library, 100 E. Main St. The event is part of a series of lectures on global awareness sponsored by Beacon College in Leesburg.

Dr. Donn G. Davis is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley (PhD) and the Yale Law School (MSL). He also holds advanced, graduate level professional development certification in legislative training from the Congressional Research Service. He is currently an Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of political science at Howard University in Washington, DC. He teaches both graduate and undergraduate level courses in the areas of constitutional law, judicial and legislative process, Presidential policymaking and black politics.

His present research interests include problems and issues related to law and society, especially the impact of the erosion of race-based remedial social policies in the post-Civil Rights Era and the continuing debate over Affirmative Action policies and programs in the US. His research in this area has recently been expanded to study and comparative analyses of socio-economic equity, equalization, and remedial policies and programs stemming from historical oppression in the societies of four (4) different countries: U.S. A., Brazil, Malaysia, and South Africa.

Dr. Davis also teaches and conducts research in the areas of Congress and the Presidency, American Institutions, black political ideology, and democracy and human rights under post-colonial regimes in the Third World.

Professor Davis was a Senior Legislative Director and counselor for a full committee of the United States Congress for fifteen (15) years. In this capacity he conducted research, wrote legislation, organized legislative and oversight hearings, and advised Members of Congress on the rules and procedures necessary to bring legislation before the full House of Representatives. Among specialists and colleagues, his expertise in the area of legislative politics and procedures is well recognized and highly regarded. Professor Davis has also designed and supervised constituent service programs for individual Members of Congress, and he has lectured on this subject to government officials, party members and the newly elected Members of legislatures in recently democratized and emerging democracies throughout Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe.

Talako Indian Dancers Return to the Leesburg Public Library

Get ready for color, music, and Native American lore as the Talako Indian Dancers come to the Leesburg Library on Wednesday, July 16 as the weekly “Big Event” performance. The Talako Dancers entertain with tales of their shared Native American heritage. Get reading to join in the line dancing at the end of the program. The Talako Dancers will perform in the Carol Gregg Meeting Room near the Main Street Entrance of the library.

Children must be signed up for Summer Reading to attend Wednesday programs, and must be wearing an orange reading wristband to identify them as Summer Readers. Sign up is in the Youth Department of the library. Groups are welcome, but all children must be registered to attend. The program will start promptly, and doors will close at 10 AM

Photo Scavenger Hunt at Leesburg Library

Teens love to take pictures and post them online. As a way to document all the different ways that teens use the library, the Leesburg Public Library will host a Photo Scavenger Hunt for ages 12 to 18. Teens should bring a digital camera or camera phone if they have one, including any necessary cords in order to upload. Teens that do not have a camera will still be able to participate as a member of a team. The event starts at 2:00 PM in “The Amazing Space,” teen room and will conclude with the photos being up loaded to a group on the photo hosting site Flickr.com.

Storyteller Katie Adams Shares Safari Stories at the Leesburg Library

Katie Adams and her Make Believe Theatre are the special guests at the Wednesday “Big Event” at the Leesburg Public Library on Wednesday, July 9 at 10 AM. Katy will guide you around the world with stories about animals from different cultures. You will even get to help tell the stories as she involves the audience in stories about Anansi the Spiderman, the Laughing Butterflies, and Crocodile’s Tale, and Papagayo. Katie Adams will be appearing in the Carol Gregg Meeting Room near the Main Street entrance of the library.

Learn to Make Dessert Sushi at the Leesburg Library

Teens will learn to make dessert sushi as a fun way to celebrate the Japanese cultural influences that have been popularized by Anime. No raw fish is involved. The session starts at 2:00 PM on June 24th in the Jacobsen Story Room at the Leesburg Public Library.
